Pondering the rubber band

Pondering the rubber band. Meagan was trying to get my attention the other day and being the creative soul she is, found a convenient rubber band and fired it at me! In one of those Eureka "ouch!" moments, a flash of inspiration came upon me. No... I didn’t run naked down the street like Archimedes... Not since college days anyway. Hmmmm? Find yourself a rubber band. It may surprise you that a rubber band with all it’s marvelous uses can even improve your health. Go ahead ... pick it up ... it won’t bite. Consider the fresh rubber band you have in your hand. When new, the band is soft and flexible. You stretch it, it snaps back. You can work with it and even have some fun! That’s the way your ligaments, muscles and tendons are supposed to be, soft and supple and stretchy. Imagine now the rubber band neglected and left out in the dry air and harsh sun. It won’t be long before it becomes stiff and brittle. Try to stretch that and you’ll see what being stiff is all abou

A Happy Referral

A Happy Referral: A very pleasant couple were in the process of relocating to our community and did not know who else to turn to. The lady had just undergone hip replacement surgery and while I have no doubt that she would benefit from seeing a chiropractor, her most immediate need was to regain her strength and mobility. With just a couple of phone calls, we had arranged for her to see a physiotherapist later that same day. There was no charge for this consultation and we were happy to refer the lady to the therapist she most needed at the time.

In The Right Place: A delightful lady asked for my evaluation numbness in her hand that had been bothering her on and off for several years. By gently moving and pressing on the side of her neck, I was able to reproduce the numbness in her hand. The source of the numbness was a pinched nerve and chiropractic was definitely the correct therapy. I recommended a course of treatment for her and the results have been good. In addition, we were able to identify the reason for her injury. How she sat at the computer was straining her neck and this was the cause of her complaint. A few modifications have helped prevent a relapse!

Letter to New Patients.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you with your health concerns. There are typically two ways a person will get their health into trouble…. The first is from a sudden traumatic overload such as car accident or a sports injury. The second and more common way is from gradual and progressive stress and strain. Constant lifting, bending, poor posture, emotional strain, etc., put ongoing stress on your joints, muscles and nervous system. The repetitive and persistent strain gradually weakens the body until even normal loads become too much. Often, major symptoms come after warnings like stiffness, aching, muscle pulls or spasm, feeling generally unwell… Very commonly, there is no warning at all! Pain and dis-ease are symptoms that tell you something is wrong. Pain killing drugs and muscle relaxing medications may help you manage your discomfort yet they only mask the symptoms. Medication is for temporary relief and does not correct the underlying injury

The Dangerous Cliff

The Dangerous Cliff T’was a dangerous cliff as they freely confessed Though to walk near its edge was so pleasant. But over its edge had slipped a duke, And it had fooled many a peasant. The people said something would have to be done But their projects did not at all tally Some said, "put a fence around the edge of the cliff," Others, "an ambulance down in the valley." The lament of the crowd was profound and loud As their hearts overflowed with pity. But the ambulance carried the cry of the day As it spread to the neighboring cities. So a collection was made to accumulate aid And dwellers in highway and alley, Gave dollars and cents not to furnish a fence, But an ambulance down in the valley. For the cliff is alright if you’re careful they said, And if folks ever slip and are falling; It’s not the slipping and falling that hurts them so much As the shock down below when they’re stopping. And so for years as these mishaps occurred Quick forth would the rescu

Case history: Jane's chair caused her injury.

A case history: Jane (name changed, yadda..), a valued employee of a leading local business institution, came to see me about pain that had progressively developed in her lower back over the past year. There was no particular event to account for her discomfort, yet by the end of a work week, she was very happy for the weekend to get some relief. This was an important clue. Through insightful discussion, I understood that Jane spent a good deal of her job seated at her desk and working with a computer. I asked Jane to demonstrate her work posture and it became evident that her habits at work put excessive strain on her back… over time, the strain was developing into a chronic injury. We discussed modifications Jane could make to her desk, chair and computer arrangement… she found and liberated a better chair from an absent coworker. Jane found to her delight, that with chiropractic treatment, a better chair and new work habits to prevent ongoing injury, she was no longer worn rag

Does stress seem to get the better of you?

Does stress seem to get the better of you? Studies reported in Scientific American emphasize the danger of stress to one’s health and well being. Students are more apt to get sick before exams and take up to twice as long to recover than during vacation periods. When people with allergies are forced to deliver a speech or face stressful situations, their allergy condition worsens over the course of the next day. Wounds take 24% longer to heal for stressed caregivers than for non-caregivers. Stress limits the ability of the immune system to fight off infections and even undermines the effectiveness of flu vaccines. With chronic stress, all sorts of bad things can happen. Not only does stress hamper your body's ability to fight infection and heal wounds, but also increases your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and autoimmune diseases including type 2 diabetes. Make no mistake… this is a significant health problem. What does this have to do with chiropractic, you ask? For many peo
