What to expect on your first visit

As your chiropractor I may be treating your back pain, neck pain, headache, or other aches and pains, but I need a complete picture of your health history and overall current health in order to provide the best possible treatment for you.

Set aside at least 30 minutes for your first visit with me. Future visits typically last 15 minutes or less, though the time required will depend upon the type of treatment you require. Here’s what you might expect.

On your first visit, I may ask about the following:

* personal and family medical history
* major illnesses you have experienced
* surgeries or operations you have had
* medications you are taking
* a description of your present condition
* the steps you have taken to manage your condition
* your diet and exercise
* your sleeping habits, daily activities, work routine, stress level, and home life

It is a good idea to wear comfortable clothes and shoes for your visit to a chiropractor. I may ask you to change into a gown to perform some of these tests, or you may bring your own shorts and T shirt:

* a check of your blood pressure, pulse and breathing
* a test of your reflexes, strength and sensations
* an analysis of your posture
* an X-ray of your spine
* an analysis of your movement — he/she will observe how you walk, turn, bend or lift things, as well as how your body moves in the affected area
* a hands-on evaluation of how well your spine moves, identifying restrictions and areas of improper motion

Tip:
Bring a copy of any X-rays or radiology reports you have. These assessments give me a better picture of your complete health. I will make a diagnosis, prescribe a course of treatment, and once the matter of informed consent has been discussed, treatment usually begins.

If I identify a concern more appropriately treated by another health care professional, I will make a referral and advocate on your behalf.

Stages of care:

* Relief care is provided for relief of immediate pain, restricted mobility and discomfort. Depending on the diagnosis, your age, physical condition, how long you have had the current complaint, and previous injuries, a few or several visits over a relatively short period of time may be necessary.

* Corrective care treats conditions that are more severe, recurring or that have existed with or without pain for some time. These may require a longer, more complex period of care. Once the severity of your condition has decreased through relief care, corrective care helps to restore normal function to your spine, muscles, supporting tissues and the nerves affected by them.

* Supportive or maintenance care helps you maintain and preserve the benefits you’ve achieved from relief and corrective care. Chiropractors are also trained to detect conditions in their early stages, often before you feel pain or reduced mobility. Continuing to work with me and having periodic spinal check-ups and treatments, if needed, will keep your spine as healthy as possible. I will work with you to find a maintenance schedule that suits your condition, health care goals, and lifestyle.

Your treatment from me, regardless of the stage of care, will often include exercise, diet and other healthy living suggestions to help keep you healthy and strong.

We will discuss a schedule of care, which will depend on your specific circumstances. For some people chiropractic treatment is like a regular tune-up, to help deal with the daily wear and tear of life. For others, it’s simply an effective treatment when pain or discomfort strikes.

Miracle Mediterranean Diet

People who have scanned my blog will appreciate that I promote doing the basic things well, and most of the other problems we have tend to diminish. Dear Reader: I've had several conversations with people that have started off something like..."What is healthier, regular (sugar) pop, or pop with aspartame?" The question is dumb ass really, because the premise is one or the other is healthy. Unless one is near starvation, and desperately in need of the sugar boost, neither product is healthy. The question then ought to be, "Which is less unhealthy?" The basic argument is that sugar is natural and aspartame is artificial and inherently more toxic. The basic reply is that if we consumed teaspoon for teaspoon sugar and aspartame, aspartame may well be toxic beyond what the body can compensate for. Short leg syndrome

Standing straight when one leg is shorter is the equivalent of standing sideways on a hill. The person cannot help but lean to the shorter side. The spine may compensate by tilting the upper body in the opposite direction. This produces a "scoliosis" or sideways deviation of the spine. It also concentrates gravitational and kinetic stress on the area where the spine transitions to the sacrum and pelvis... the lumbo-sacral junction....  NOT GOOD. Often a person will try to compensate for a short leg by perching on short leg, usually with the longer leg bent at the knee and turned out...effectively shortening the long leg. NOT GOOD. Rather than balancing the pelvis, fatigue and strain usually causes the pelvis to over compensate. In either case, the distortion of the spine unevenly loads the joints and muscles, and promotes faster wear and tear, and injury. Lumber Disc Injury, Herniated Disc, Bulging Disc, Low Back Pain, Sciatica, Spinal Traction Therapy Lumbar disc injuries range from strained tissue, to a bulging disc, to complete herniation.    The pain and disability is usually proportional to the degree of injury and complications, especially if a bulging or herniated disc is pressing on a nerve.  At times, a disc can herniate with minimal pain or disability. It is usually the tissues around the disc that cause the most pain.
